U.S. Military Initiates Movement Towards Gaza
The U.S. military has taken action to set up a temporary pier to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza from the Mediterranean Sea. Key components of the pier are being transported from the Port of Ashdod in Israel to Gaza to anchor on the beach for aid operations, as confirmed by defense officials.
Operation Expected to Begin Soon
The construction of the floating platform and causeway, constituting the temporary pier, was finalized last week. Despite weather delays, the pieces are now being moved into place, with the pier projected to become operational as early as Thursday. The urgent need for aid in Gaza has intensified amid potential Israeli military action in Rafah, prompting a swift response.
Corridor to Enhance Aid Delivery
The Biden administration’s maritime corridor initiative aims to bolster aid access, complementing existing routes and procedures. The corridor will kickstart operations in Cyprus, where aid will be inspected, loaded onto ships, and then transferred to Gaza via the temporary pier. Coordination efforts involve various stakeholders, with security provided by the Israeli Defense Forces.
Focus on Aid Delivery Efficiency
Vice Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the corridor is equipped to handle significant aid volumes, with plans to scale up operations swiftly. The cost of the initiative is estimated at $320 million, underscoring the commitment to humanitarian relief efforts. President Biden emphasized the importance of prioritizing innocent lives and ensuring aid reaches those in need without U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza.
