Prayers Urged as Rescue Crews Rush to the Scene
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter experienced a “hard landing” in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, near Jolfa. The incident occurred as Raisi, along with other officials including Iran’s Foreign Minister, was returning from inaugurating a dam with Azerbaijan’s President.
Rescue Efforts Hindered by Poor Weather
Rescuers are facing challenges reaching the site due to heavy rain, fog, and rugged terrain. Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi mentioned the difficulties posed by the weather conditions, as various teams make their way to the landing site to assess the situation.
International Concern and Sanctions Background
The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring the situation. Raisi, sanctioned by the U.S., faces scrutiny for his actions during the 1988 mass executions. Under his leadership, Iran has escalated its uranium enrichment and engaged in contentious international activities, including supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict and launching attacks against Israel and proxy groups in the Middle East.
