European Space Agency Captures Images of Mysterious Features
The European Space Agency (ESA) has made a remarkable discovery on Mars, revealing a phenomenon that resembles spiders scuttling across the planet’s surface. Images captured by the Mars Express orbiter show small, dark-colored features that form when sunlight interacts with carbon dioxide deposits during the Martian winter months. The ESA explains that the sunlight triggers the carbon dioxide ice to transform into gas, leading to geyser-like eruptions of dust before settling back down on the surface.
Large ‘Spiders’ Unveiled Beneath the Martian Ice
Although these ‘spiders’ may seem minuscule from afar, they are actually quite substantial. The ESA notes that the patches, as wide as 145 feet at their smallest, could span over half a mile. Beneath these large spots lies an intricate arachnid-like pattern carved beneath the carbon dioxide ice, as captured by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. This spacecraft, launched in 2016, has been meticulously studying Mars for any indications of past life, including these peculiar formations.
Mystery Surrounding Mars’ ‘Inca City’
The majority of these dark spots appear near a region of Mars referred to as “Inca City,” characterized by its linear ridges reminiscent of Incan architecture. This area, known as Angustus Labyrinthus and located near the planet’s south polar cap, has intrigued scientists since its discovery in 1972. The origins of this geological feature remain uncertain, with theories ranging from petrified sand dunes to the infiltration of materials such as magma or sand through rock formations.
