Social Media Star Gunned Down in Baghdad
Authorities in Iraq are currently investigating the tragic killing of Ghufran Mahdi Sawadi, a well-known social media influencer who gained popularity on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Sawadi, also known as Um Fahad, was fatally shot by an armed motorcyclist outside her home in central Baghdad. The assailant reportedly opened fire as Sawadi parked her Cadillac in front of her house, stealing her phone before fleeing the scene.
Sawadi’s Murder Adds to a Series of Similar Incidents
This incident is not the first of its kind in Baghdad. Sawadi’s killing mirrors the fatal shooting of another social media figure, Noor Alsaffar, in the same area last year. The neighborhood where Sawadi was attacked has seen previous high-profile incidents, including the murder of Iraqi researcher Hisham al-Hashimi in 2020.
Social Media Influencers in Iraq Face Scrutiny
In Iraq, social media influencers play a significant role in various aspects of society, from promoting products to government initiatives. However, their activities have recently come under scrutiny, with the government imposing restrictions on content deemed inappropriate or indecent. Sawadi herself faced legal repercussions in the past, receiving a prison sentence for posting objectionable content online.
Controversial Legislation Passed by Iraqi Parliament
Separately, the Iraqi parliament has passed an amendment to the country’s prostitution law, drawing criticism from human rights groups. The revised law now includes harsh penalties for same-sex relations, with sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years in prison. Additionally, the legislation targets organizations promoting “sexual deviancy,” imposing hefty fines and lengthy prison terms.
