Union Demands Higher Pay for Airport Workers
BERLIN – The Ver.di union in Germany has announced a one-day strike for ground staff at Lufthansa, impacting seven major airports on Tuesday. The strike comes after a previous walkout earlier this month.
The Affected Airports: Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn, and Stuttgart will be affected by the strike, scheduled from 4 a.m. Tuesday to 7:10 a.m. Wednesday.
The union is pushing for pay raises of 12.5% or a minimum increase of 500 euros per month for approximately 25,000 employees. These workers include check-in staff, aircraft handlers, maintenance workers, and freight staff.
This move follows a 27-hour strike at five of the same airports on Feb. 7, which led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The ongoing negotiations have yet to yield an agreement, with the next round of talks set for Wednesday.
Warning strikes are a common strategy in German labor negotiations, with unions using short-term walkouts to pressure employers to meet their demands.
