Protest Against Rising Violence
Truckers in Mexico City took to the highways in protest against the increasing violence and killings of drivers during highway robberies. The Mexican Alliance of Drivers’ Organizations organized the protest, demanding the government to intensify highway patrols to ensure the safety of drivers.
Violent Robberies on the Rise
The protest highlighted the grim reality faced by drivers, with a banner on one truck declaring, “The highways of Mexico are stained with blood.” Previously, thieves hijacked trucks for merchandise, but now, they are resorting to killing drivers and selling trucks for parts.
Government Response and Protest Demands
Despite the Interior Department’s claims of negotiating with other truck drivers’ groups for more patrol cars, the Amotac protests were labeled as “unjustified and baseless” by the authorities. The protesting group is also calling for increased inspections on dangerous double-semi trailers and the elimination of certain charges and tolls.
