Shopkeeper Nazer Mohammad’s world turned upside down in an instant as flash floods ravaged the outskirts of a northern Afghan provincial capital, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Upon rushing home, Mohammad found his entire family of five missing, swallowed by the merciless waters. Burdened with the heartbreaking task of burying his wife and two sons, Mohammad continues to search desperately for his two young daughters.
Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds
The U.N. food agency has reported a death toll exceeding 300 as a result of the unprecedented heavy rains in Afghanistan, with thousands of homes laid to waste. The province of Baghlan, hit hardest by the calamity, witnessed the bulk of casualties from the catastrophic deluges on Friday. Among the deceased are 51 children, amplifying the scale of this tragic event.
International Aid Efforts Underway
International aid groups, including UNICEF and Save the Children, have mobilized relief teams and supplies to the affected regions, extending a lifeline to an estimated 600,000 individuals, half of whom are children.
