Top Afghan Diplomat in India Steps Down
Afghanistan’s senior diplomat in India, Zakia Wardak, has resigned from her position as the Consul-General in Mumbai after being embroiled in a gold smuggling case. Reports surfaced claiming Wardak attempted to sneak nearly $2 million worth of gold into the country.
Resignation Amid Controversy
Wardak, who served as the most senior Afghan representative in India, announced her decision to step down, effective May 5, 2024. The incident, where Wardak and her son were reportedly stopped with 55 pounds of gold at Mumbai airport, has left Afghan nationals in India without consular representation.
Challenges Faced by Women in Afghan Society
In her resignation statement, Wardak mentioned facing personal attacks and defamation over the past year, alluding to the difficulties women encounter in Afghan society. The Taliban’s control over Afghan embassies abroad remains a contentious issue, with some diplomats still loyal to the former government.
