Two Deaths and Over 100 Sickened
Japanese health authorities have taken a significant step by ordering the removal of health supplements from store shelves after reports of two deaths and more than 100 people falling ill. The products, manufactured by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., contained an ingredient known as “benikoji,” a red mold species believed to be the cause of the illnesses.
Widespread Recall
Aside from Kobayashi’s products, over 40 items from various other companies that also contained benikoji have been recalled. These products ranged from miso paste to crackers and even a vinegar dressing. The government health ministry has issued a warning and listed all the affected products on its official website.
Company Investigation and Apology
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. is conducting an investigation into the issue, and they have issued an apology to the public. The company urged consumers to stop using their products immediately and assured that they are looking into the root cause of the problem.
Potential Risks
The ministry officials have urged caution among consumers, especially those with underlying health conditions like weak kidneys, as they may be more susceptible to the effects of benikoji. The recall affects products that were made in Japan, although the source of the mold contamination remains unclear.
