Arrest and Accusations
The Federal Security Service of Russia has apprehended a woman holding dual U.S. and Russian citizenship under allegations of treason. The individual, who remains unnamed by authorities, was identified by her employer in California as Ksenia Khavana, formerly known as Ksenia Karelina. She was arrested in Russia’s Yekaterinburg for allegedly fundraising for the Ukrainian military during a visit to her family.
Identity and Allegations
Ksenia Khavana, 33, holds citizenship in both the U.S. and Russia. Reports indicate she had obtained U.S. citizenship through marriage. A ballet dancer by profession, Khavana had resided in Los Angeles for years, working at Ciel Spa in Beverly Hills. Despite her dual nationality, she maintained close ties with her Russian family, visiting them annually.
Accusations and Denial
The Federal Security Service accuses Khavana of actively collecting funds for a Ukrainian organization, alleging the money was used for military purposes. However, her employer attests that she was raising money for humanitarian aid and had contributed to a U.S.-based nonprofit providing medical assistance to Ukraine. The organization distanced itself from confirming Khavana’s donations for privacy reasons.
Current Situation
Khavana’s detention as a “preventative measure” is ongoing while investigations proceed. Amid concerns for her well-being and fears following recent events in Russian prisons, efforts are being made by U.S. officials to secure consular access. If found guilty of treason, Khavana could face up to 20 years in prison, prompting anxiety among her acquaintances about the lack of justice in the Russian judicial system.
