Rebels Target Belize-Flagged Ship
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Authorities have pointed fingers at Yemen’s Houthi rebels for an attack that caused damage to a Belize-flagged ship in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strait connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and is a crucial maritime route.
The attack took place on Sunday and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center confirmed that the ship sustained damage due to “an explosion in close proximity to the vessel.” Fortunately, the crew members aboard the ship are reported to be safe.
U.S. Military Conducts Airstrikes
The U.S. military has acknowledged conducting airstrikes against the Houthi rebels, targeting their military equipment. The strikes included hitting mobile anti-ship cruise missiles and an underwater drone, marking the first time the rebels have used such a vessel since attacks began in October.
The rebels have been targeting ships in the region since November, affecting trade routes among Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Despite not immediately claiming responsibility for the recent attack, a statement from the rebels is expected to be released soon.
