Little Emotion as Sentence is Handed Down
In a courtroom filled with tension, Martin, a former mobster, showed little emotion as the judge delivered his sentence. Struggling to rise from his chair, Martin was unable to react as the judge adjourned the hearing.
Health Concerns Prompt Recommended Sentence
Both the defense and federal prosecutors recommended that Martin be sentenced to time served due to his health. Martin, who is housebound in hospice care, has been given a life expectancy of six months. His chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder requires constant oxygen therapy.
The Unfortunate Misunderstanding
At the time of the theft, Martin was unaware that the stolen slippers were not adorned with real rubies. According to his lawyer’s memo, Martin had the slippers in his possession for less than 48 hours before handing them over to an unnamed associate. He expressed a firm desire to never see them again.
Long Road to Justice
The FBI recovered the iconic ruby slippers, one of only four remaining pairs, in 2018. Another individual attempted to claim a reward for their return, leading to the discovery. However, it wasn’t until last year that Martin faced charges for the theft. In October, he pleaded guilty and confessed to smashing the museum’s glass door and display case with a hammer in order to take the slippers.
