Sportsbook Draws Backlash Over Insensitive Parlay Option
Popular sportsbook DraftKings has issued an apology after facing criticism for offering a parlay option that appeared to exploit the 22nd anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. The company, known for its fantasy sports and sports betting services, came under fire for a wagering promotion titled “Never Forget,” which attempted to draw a connection between the tragic event and betting on New York sports teams to win their games on September 11th.
Controversial Promotion Removes After Outrage
DraftKings provided bettors with +651 odds if they chose the Mets to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Yankees to defeat the Boston Red Sox, and the Jets to win over the Buffalo Bills as a package deal. The promotion, which read “Bet these New York teams to win tonight on 9/11,” was swiftly criticized and later removed from the platform. However, screenshots of the promotion continue to circulate on social media.
Apology from DraftKings
Following the backlash, DraftKings released a statement expressing regret for the inappropriate promotion. The company acknowledged the significance of September 11th for the country and particularly for the families affected by the tragedy. The statement read, “We sincerely apologize for the featured parlay that was shared briefly in commemoration of 9/11. We respect the significance of this day for our country and especially for the families of those who were directly affected.”
No Further Comment from DraftKings
Despite the apology, DraftKings has not provided additional comments or addressed further inquiries regarding the controversial promotion. The company’s decision to offer such a wagering option on an emotionally charged anniversary has raised concerns about sensitivity and respect in the realm of sports betting.
