Crews Begin Removal of Scaffolding Used by Trespassers
City crews in Los Angeles have initiated efforts to secure an unfinished high-rise complex in downtown Los Angeles that has become a hotspot for vandalism and dangerous stunts. The development, which was intended to feature a hotel and luxury condominiums, was left incomplete in 2019 when the developer from Beijing ran out of funds.
Workers have started dismantling scaffolding that has been aiding trespassers in accessing the property. Police Sergeant Gordon Helper expressed concerns over the security breach, stating that trespassers were able to enter by tearing holes in the fence and hiding in the walkway area.
City Leaders Fear for Public Safety Amidst Social Media Stunts
The situation at the abandoned towers has escalated, with reports of individuals engaging in risky activities such as BASE jumping from the structures. City officials are alarmed by the potential for accidents, with Helper emphasizing the need to prevent any injuries or fatalities on the premises.
City Councilmember Kevin de León has stressed the urgency of finding a new developer to resume construction. He estimates that acquiring the property and completing the project would require a substantial investment of $2 billion.
The deteriorating state of the high-rise complex has become a point of concern for the city, particularly given its proximity to prominent landmarks such as Crypto.com Arena, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and L.A. Live. Efforts are underway to address the security issues and revitalize the site for the benefit of the community.
