In the midst of escalating tensions in the Middle East, U.S. President Joe Biden has voiced concerns over Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank. As Israel intensifies its strikes on Gaza, Biden called for an immediate cessation of settler attacks, likening them to “pouring gasoline on fire.”
During a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s unwavering support for Israel’s defense. However, he expressed concerns over the treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank by extremist settlers. He emphasized that such attacks on Palestinians in areas they are entitled to be in must cease immediately.
While Biden criticized Hamas for using Palestinian civilians in Gaza as shields, he also stressed that Israel must adhere to the “laws of war.” The ongoing conflict has seen a surge in violence since early October, with significant casualties on both sides.
The president also expressed skepticism regarding the civilian casualty figures reported by the Palestinians. While acknowledging the tragic loss of innocent lives, he questioned the accuracy of the numbers presented by Palestinian authorities.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation, with the World Health Organization (WHO) urging Hamas to provide evidence of the well-being of hostages and to release them on health grounds. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRAW) has also warned of an impending humanitarian crisis in Gaza if fuel supplies are not restored.
However, efforts to address the crisis at the United Nations have been stymied. Proposals for humanitarian aid and ceasefires faced vetoes and opposition from major powers, leaving the region in a precarious state.
Biden, in his remarks, emphasized the need for a long-term vision for peace in the region. He advocated for a two-state solution, where both Israelis and Palestinians can coexist in safety and dignity. He called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including regional partners and global leaders, to pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
