Financial Constraints Force LA Opera to Withdraw
LA Opera has announced its withdrawal from the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Grounded” due to financial constraints caused by the ongoing pandemic. The expensive project was deemed unmanageable in the current conditions, according to LA Opera CEO Christopher Koelsch.
Return to Pre-COVID Normalcy
Although LA Opera has seen a return of its audience and stable revenue, the cost structure remains a challenge. Koelsch stated that operationally, the company is back to pre-COVID normalcy, but the financial burden is still present.
Metropolitan Opera’s Comic Book Industry Focus
The Met first discussed plans for the “Grounded” project in 2018, with a focus on the development of the comic book industry. However, Koelsch made the decision to drop LA’s participation in October, citing the financial challenges faced by all opera companies in America.
Met’s General Manager Expresses Sympathy
Met’s general manager, Peter Gelb, expressed sympathy towards LA Opera’s decision, acknowledging the financial challenges faced by opera companies. Gelb mentioned that he wished the timing had been better but looks forward to the show’s premiere at the Met.
Changes and Rewrites
Composer Jeanine Tesori and librettist George Brandt are currently working on rewrites for “Grounded” before its premiere at the Met in the 2024-25 season. Gelb prefers having new works open at other companies to allow room for changes and improvements before their presentation at the Met.
Shift to Jacobs School
Evans Mirageas, the Cincinnati Opera’s artistic director, suggested the Jacobs School as an alternative venue to the Met. The dimensions of its theater stage are similar, making it a suitable option. Abra K. Bush, dean of the Jacobs School, immediately accepted the proposal despite financial concerns.
New Direction for “Grounded”
The Jacobs School is making preparations for the production of “Grounded,” with plans to clear space in their 2024-25 schedule. Bartlett Sher will direct the production in Indiana, with Michael Christie likely to conduct. Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will take over for the New York premiere.
Story of Jewish Immigrants and American Culture
“Grounded” tells the story of Jewish immigrants who played a significant role in shaping American culture, a theme that resonates strongly in LA. The move to Indiana is seen as an opportunity for more flexibility and experimentation in the production.
